University System of Maryland
The University System of Maryland (USM) comprises 13 major units: 11 degree-granting institutions and two research components. It is governed and managed by the Board of Regents, whose memebers are appointed by the Governor. The Board includes a Student Regent who is appointed on an annual basis.
Through the Board of Regents and the Chancellor, the USM advocates for higher education at the state and federal levels. Many University policies as well as capital projects require approval by the Board of Regents.
