Transportation

Shuttle UM

Shuttle UM is a student-operated transit service offering commuter transit, night campus security transportation, charter service, and services for students with special mobility needs. The cost of regular shuttle services is included in the mandatory fees. Schedules and maps are available at the Stamp Student Union Information Desk, the Office of Commuter Affairs (1195 Stamp Union), and the Shuttle-UM Office on Greenhouse Road. All riders must show proof of current registration (picture I.D.) to access these services.

Metrocheck or SmartTrip

The Metrochek program offers a pre-tax deduction / benefit to faculty, staff, graduate assistants and teaching assistants who utilize public transportation options for their commute to and from work. Depending on your authorized deduction amount and your tax bracket, you can potentially save hundreds of dollars per year by participating in this program. Deductions are taken bi-weekly for 20 pay periods between September and June, and monthly benefits are assigned to either a SmarTrip card (electronic transfer) for riders of Metrorail, Metrobus and over 140 participating transit companies OR distributed via Metrocheks (paper fare cards) for riders of MARC, VRE, The Bus, Dillon's Bus Service and Eyre Bus Service. For more information, please check out the DOTS website here.

Exemptions for Moving Vehicles for Sporting Events

Those people parking in lots 9B, 9C, 11C, and 4B (near the Comcast Center) are required to move their cars to Lot 1 several hours before men's home basketball games. Exemptions for academic reasons can be granted for graduate students in some cases. Acceptable reasons might include taking a class, teaching a class or section, or running an experiment.

Documentation (which can be self-written) should be given to the Director of Transportation Services, at least 24 hours in advance. Documentation should be brought to his office in Building 202 of Regents Drive Garage. For contact information, see the DOTS website here.

Medical vs. Disabled Parking Passes

Graduate students with medical conditions may receive a medical parking pass from the University's Department of Transportation. A note from a doctor must be brought to the University Health Center. The Health Center will then give documentation, which must be brought to the Transporation Office in Regents Drive Garage Building #202. The Transporation Office will then give a pass to the student lot nearest the graduate student's office or lab on campus. The graduate student must already have a campus parking permit in order to get a medical parking pass.

An alternative is to get a Temporary Disability Parking Permit from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. The disability should be expected to last three weeks and the permit is good for up to six months. This permit allows for parking in any disability parking space in the state of Maryland, on or off campus. The process requires filling out Maryland MVA form number VR-210, Maryland Parking Placards/License Plates for Individuals with a Disability. The form requires a doctor's certification.
