Are you interested in learning more about blizzards, nor'easters, and other severe winter weather? Well, now's your chance! The National Weather Service is coming to campus on Saturday, Nov. 7 to teach "Winter Storms", which is part of their Skywarn Storm Spotter training series. Although Basics I is required to receive credit, anyone with a strong interest and basic knowledge of meteorology is invited to attend. The class is FREE but please register online at http://www.atmos.umd.edu/~gcm/ to ensure a space. A free pizza and soda lunch will be provided courtesy of the Graduate Student Government. Event Report
Anthony Santorelli sends this report from the event:
"The graduate student organization METOGRADS co-sponsored the Skywarn Winter Storms class with the Baltimore/Washington National Weather Service office on November 7th from 11am to 3pm in 1102 Martin Hall. This class was open to all UMD students as well as the public. 65 people attended the class, and about 15 were graduate students. Since this was a more advanced course that was offered in comparison to the course we have in the Spring, Basics I, attendance was expected to be lower, although I think we had 10-15 more show up this Fall than for the previous Winter Storms class in Oct '08. Therefore, we were at or above expectations for attendance/demographic for this event.
As has been true in the past, the lunch we were able to provide to the people in attendance was appreciated and enjoyed very much. It is a great break in the 4 hour session, and we got to also talk with the crowd as we helped dish out the food. We hope to continue our success of these Skywarn classes with our offering of Basics I in late February/early March 2010, with the goal of breaking our attendance record of 115 from last year! I hope we can continue to work with the GSG to make these events as great as they have been. "
