Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

Event Description:

The Mid-Autumn Festival to Chinese is the equivalent of Thanksgiving to Americans, a holiday for family gathering and among the most important holidays in a year. Our celebration party will consist of a Chinese cultural exhibition, followed by a Chinese movie, a dance session, and a Karaoke contest. Additionally, we will have a special seminar for the 2006 new Chinese students. This seminar will be a good assistance for their living and study in America .

Mayfest 2006: Language Learning Fest: Counts, Cues, Constraints and Computation

Event Description:
Mayfest 2006 is a Language Learning Fest, a 2-day workshop (May 12th and 13th) devoted to research on the role of input and how it is processed by children in first language acquisition. Its two principal aims are (i) to bring together language acquisition researchers representing theoretical, experimental and computational approaches, and (ii) to promote discussions and interactions among researches with different perspectives so as to further our understanding of the field.

Marita Sturken, professor in the department of culture and communications at NYU and Editor of "American Quarterly," is giving a lecture on her upcoming book. This talk examines the way in which American culture encourages a "tourist" relationship to history, one that reveals the deep investment in the concept of innocence in American culture.

Astronomy Unjournal Club meeting

Event Description:
A graduate student in astronomy will be presenting her research on the spurs and feathers observed in the M51 galaxy. She has performed surveys of other spiral galaxies to see how common these features are. These structures are believed to be caused by gravitational instabilities. This talk will be in preparation for her thesis proposal.

Event Description:
GUILFORD STREAM CLEAN-UP: Mother Nature and the Graduate Student Government want you to come out, grab some gloves and get to work! All graduate students are invited to help clean up Guilford Stream (the stream that runs between Graduate Gardens and campus). Come out and enjoy the fresh air, the great company, and feel good while you make the great out doors look good!!
What to bring:
Sturdy work gloves, if you have them.
Optional Breakfast or Lunch get-together afterwards!

National Weather Service Basics I Skywarn Training Class

Learn how to spot severe thunderstorms and tornadoes and become a certified NWS "Spotter". All certified NWS "Spotters" can report the location and severity of storms to the local NWS.
