B6: Urban Issues, Oral Presentation, GRID 2009

11:00 AM-12:00 PM, Jimenez

Almost every year, we witness the destructive power of nature and its aftermath, both locally and globally. However, the housing solutions for those left without a place to stay seem inhumane and in some cases hazardous. How can we improve the current system?

Perhaps the problem lies within our notion of natural disaster itself. Instead of viewing flooding as a disaster that needs to be overcome, we should look at it as a constant natural occurrence that we need to account for and live in harmony with and further celebrate.

Following the examples of the ancient Egyptians celebrating the inundation of the Nile, we could apply the same attitude towards flood prone areas in the south regions in the United States and build with, not against, nature.

The focus will be on site intervention and modular residential prototypes. Site interventions will be made to celebrate and modular housing will be proposed to withstand the natural occurrence of flooding. The development of modular units will be studied with the focus on performance, sustainability, and affordability.
